Waldo Bridge Ride
WALDO COVERED BRIDGE RIDE
For a little over a year, I've wanted to photograph Waldo Covered Bridge, also known as Riddle Mill. It rests about 7 miles south of Talladega Alabama, which makes that about an hour and a half ride for us.
I didn't know for certain if the property was private or was posted no trespassing. I messaged a friend in the area, and they explained to me they were told there was no public access, but with gas in the tanks and our minds made up we rode anyway.
At about 9am on October 23, 2021, we hit the road. It was a beautiful Fall Day with temps in the 60's and low humidity. That made for a wonderful ride. Our route took us on the back roads of Alabama, through Penton, Milltown, Abanda, Wadley and Ashland. Neat little towns with Mom-and-Pop stores scattered about. I encourage anyone, in any state, to hop off the interstate or main U.S. highways and take the back roads. With our busy lives we drive right by history, sometimes we need to get off of the interstate.
After one stop, an hour, and a half of riding, we made it to the property. The bridge cannot be seen from the road. The only clue that you have arrived is an abandoned, faded red and tired restaurant that sits near the old Hwy 77 route. The first thing I noticed was a sign that read "Not a public park". Surely, I can't be this close only to be turned away by the glaring bright white and black sign that I wasn't welcome. But maybe just maybe there is hope yet. A For Sale sign with a realtor's number on it.
I tend to be the cautious one in our marital agreement and not wanting to get in trouble I mentioned to my Wife I would call the realtor. "Oh, come on!" she says looking towards the back of the property.
After a few minutes on the phone explaining my business there with the realtor I had my permission! A place we rode right by years ago not knowing it even existed, finally I'd get my picture! Such a gorgeous old bridge sitting quietly spanning the water over Talladega Creek. The bridge was condemned in the 60's so the approach ramps were removed to keep people from trying to cross it. I was able to get some great shots, flew my drone for some aerials and even got an interior picture with it. It was a great day of photography and adventure spent with my Wife. We even had a great cheeseburger in Lineville at Burger Quick. Check em out!
